Composite poker chips
For the casual poker player, choosing a poker chip set is easy. They simply choose a design that they like and make a purchase. For more experienced poker players choosing a poke chip set is more akin to choosing a car.
The experienced player knows what he or she wants in a poker chip and then chooses a design based upon those criteria. There are two major categories of poker chips for the home market: clay poker chips and composite poker chips.
The first thing to note, however, is that all clay poker chips are, themselves, composites of clay and other materials. So when we talk about composite poker chips, we are talking about a specific material called ABS composite.
ABS stands for Acrylonitrile Butadien Styrene. ABS is a rugged plastic compound typically used to make housings, piping and valve parts.
There are several reasons to buy a poker chip set with ABS composite poker chips. The first reason is that because the composite material is so dense and hard it is very hard to scratch or mark ABS poker chips without explicit intent.
This, of course, means that a properly cared for set of composite poker chips will last a lifetime. On top of the material being durable, most composite poker chips are injection die molded around a metal core, making them all but indestructible.
Clay poker chips, on the other hand, are much softer and are therefore much more succeptible to scuffs and scratches and even chipping in severe cases.
Another advantage of ABS composite poker chips over clay poker chips is that they adhere to their molds better than clay poker chips, meaning that each element in the design of an ABS composite poker chip will be sharper, more defined, and more even than on clay poker chips.
Composite poker chips come in many different weights and designs. The most common weight for composite poker chips is 11.5 grams. Casino poker chips are usually between 9 grams and 11 grams, but the home market seems to favor heavier poker chips.
Poker chips up to 14 grams are common for the home market. Designs for composite poker chips also vary and come in solid color, two color, and tri color.
Tri color poker chips are more expensive than poker chips with less colors because it costs more to manufacture a die with three colors than two.
Poker table tops
Nothing goes better with composite poker chips than a quality poker table top. Most poker table tops fold for easy storage, and because they are lightweight and portable, you can take them anywhere.
Poker table tops are the perfect way to make an average breakfast or dining table feel like a real casino poker table, and when you stack your poker chips at your seat at the table it makes the home poker experience much more authentic.
Poker table tops are the perfect gift for poker players.
